Discrimination
-
the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
-
recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and another.
but discrimination comes in different forms.
There’s many times i’ve been to somewhere that outside food isn’t always allowed and most of those times they’ve had signs up to allow people to know of the policy.
Today, we went to a local cafe/ kids play area that i’ve been to many times and never seen a sign saying its not allowed, we took our own food in as it was too cold to eat outside. A member of staff came over (as she was walking past) to tell us no outside food could be eaten unless you’d bought something from them.
Understandable.
I was not only sitting at a table with a friend who had bought two meals and drinks but I was about to get up and get myself a tea (and probably a cake) before she said this.
I went up to get my drink only to be told of the policy again, I’m not too sure why as I hadn’t walked over eating the food still?
We spent time playing and talking and was now getting ready to leave when Pops wanted a bite of the crust of her sandwich.
The woman came over and said she would have to leave if she ate anymore of it. I reminded her I had bought the drink to which she added ‘yeah one drink, after we told you’.
I’m not sure what that matters?
I pointed out the chip shop chips on the table next to us and was told that because the woman had bought an extra drink to what I had (spent more money) and there wasn’t many chips (It was a cone of chips so not sure what she classes as many) that it was acceptable.
At that moment I felt so personally attacked and discriminated against, not because of my race or my gender but because of the amount of money that I was able / willing to spend.
If there is a rule, that’s fine, I won’t bring food from outside. When that rule allows some people to bring it and is based on the amount of money someone CAN or DOES pay… I dont think that is acceptable.
I just don’t believe you should allow the rule to be ‘bent’ for certain people. I certainly don’t think it should be based on the amount of money spent either. To me, that is a form of discrimination.
Have you ever felt discriminated against?
Until the next post,
Are and Pops.
Omg that’s disgusting….. Its a child as well……. Bearing in mind that you guys have dietary restrictions on the food you eat and they don’t really cater to much to that….. Plus were meeting friends there that were eating food from there it shouldn’t have been an issue…. Nextvtine ll go somewhere else and they will not only lose your custom but your friends as well !
If they do have such rules they should not be subject to the amount that is paid. However it should state no outside food or drink should be consumed, otherwise it is open to discrimination like what occurred in your situation. You were singled out and in my opinion abused verbally by an employee, simple as. I am so sorry you had to deal with this.
Thank you for your comment. I’m hoping that some good comes from it and they realise their mistake even if it makes future visits a little awkward haha.
