Wicked The Musical is currently on a tour of the UK and Ireland and last night we got the chance to see the show at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

The show is based on the book ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ by Gregory Maguire. The story follows the witch from The Wizard of Oz. Another side of the story and one that makes you question whether the witch was really wicked at all.

My first experience of Wicked The Musical was about 10 years ago (It’s just celebrated its 12th birthday) when a friend and I went to the Apollo theater in London to see it. I remember walking out of the show mesmerised by the incredible set, beautiful costumes and breathtaking voices. Last nights performance was just as amazing.

I was lucky enough to meet 2 of the actors in full costume before the show and the costumes were just as beautiful and impressive as they look on stage.

The set design is so well incorporated, especially when the monkeys are on stage and the lighting is breathtaking at times.

Amy Ross (Elphaba) gave a beautiful performance and made it all seem so easy. I always think that shows how talented someone is. Charli Baptie (Glinda) gave one of my favourite version of ‘Popular’ and her performance throughout was amazing. She is understudy to Helen Woolf. One of the biggest surprises of the night was Aaron Sidwell (Fiyero), you may remember him as Steven Beale from Eastenders… I certainly did (I used to fancy him when he first played the role). He played the role of Fiyero really well and although his voice wasn’t as effortless as the other performers he could definitely hold his own.

I couldn’t fault any of the performances and at the end my friend turned to me and said “It’s mad to think there’s only that many people in it” I couldn’t agree more. The show was so exciting and full of enregy, While it wasn’t the smallest cast the performance they gave make you feel there’s a lot more of them then there actually was.
